Patrimoine

The City Hall was built in one of the ancient gates of the city, from 1759 to 1771. The building is the work of Gauthey and Dumorey. Registered historical monument since 1931, the City Hall of Givry is one of the most beautiful in France.

It’s a massif structure, cubical, shaped in triumphal arch, embellished with a decor made of loose stones. On the roof, its campanile shelters three bells registered “Historical objects”. At the eve of the Revolution, the call to the assemblies was done through the sound of the City Hall’s bells, no longer to the church’s ones. This was a sign of the willingness of independence from the peasants.

On the western face, the stone is engraved with the year 1771, in Roman numerals and an escutcheon with the arms of Givry: sheaf, branches of oak tree and fig-leaves. On the eastern face appear the Arms of France.
Amongst the rich municipal archives stands an outstanding document, thought to be the oldest civil register of France. This book, holds by priests, identifies baptisms, weddings and sepulchres from 1303 to 1357.

The church Saint Peter and Saint Paul is located outside the fortification, on the site of an old church, which was collapsing in the 17th century.

Built from 1772 to 1791, it is the work of Emiland Gauthey. The church is made of stones from Givry (pink-red on the outside and white in the inside) and is south-oriented because inhabitants wanted to have a lovely entrance on the main road. It is an uncommon building in the region where, traditionally the roman style predominates. Neoclassicism finds here a good illustration, through the pyramidal shapes, pediments and domes.

The bell tower rests on a mere porch, pierced of four columned openings with a circular pediment on each side. The arrow peaks at 47 meters. Entering the church, you will have the feeling that you enter a roman temple, because of the centred plan and the columns. In the body, ionic columns bolster the grandstands and the big elliptical cupola.

The “Halle Ronde”, is located in the city centre. At the beginning it was the seed market. This circular building was built from 1825 to 1830. Inside, the central spiral staircase and the wooden frame are two remarkable examples of the handcrafted work of the time. The building is registered historical monuments as well, and now hosts exhibitions and wine tasting.

Givry counts seven fountains, built up between the 18th and 19th centuries.

Next to the City Hall, a bit of the fortification wall from the 13th century is still visible. It used to form a quadrilateral flanked with eight towers, pierced of 4 gates corresponding to the four cardinal points. From the 17th century onwards, the ramparts have been integrated in the city and the ditches surrounding them have been filled up as the village grew.

The church of Russily, built in 1768, is not the primitive one. This one was 300 meters in the west of the village. Next to it, in Cortiambles, a very original wash house stands. It is called ‘impluvium” and was built in 1829.

At the summit of the hill, the “Cellier aux Moines” is certainly one of the most beautiful regional sites. It is an ancient Cistercian viticultural estate. The cellars and the chapel have been reworked a few times. It is also possible to admire a gate, contemporary from the ones in the abbey of Tournus. The estate, as well as its mill, are registered.

Wine

In South Burgundy, vineyard of the Chalonnaise Coast spreads on 25km, developing 1540ha between Beaune and the Maconnais.

The Vine arrived here during the Roman conquest but was truly developed in the Middle Age, under the influence of the Church of Chalon Sur Saone, Cluny and La Ferte. Wine was used, at the time, for the mass, as a comfort for the diseased, as a prosperous income and as a really appreciated gift of the distinguished guests.

Dukes of Burgundy were pleased to offer local wines and, to assure their quality, Philippe le Hardy imposed the pinot noir everywhere in the duchy.

At the end of the 19th century, while the wines of the Chalonnaise coast were highly valued by the connoisseurs, but phylloxera destroyed the vineyard. Vine stock were uprooted, instead were planted hardy American seedlings on which Burgundian grape were grafted.

Later on, the vine quality was acknowledged by the awarding of the Appelation d’Origine Controlée (AOC): Mercurey in 1923, Givry in 1946 and Bourgogne Côte Chalonnaise in 1992.

Our land mainly produced red wines (pinot noir), white wines (chardonnay) are also part of it, though less important.

Besides the prestigious Givry 1er Cru, Mercurey and Mercurey 1er Cru, are also produced: Bourgogne Aligoté, Passetoutgrain and Crémant.

The quality of our wines, worldwide recognized, is the outcome of tradition, passion and hard work. Vintners are deeply committed to their work: their savoir-faire guarantees the authenticity, the character and the quality of our wines.
